Stories of Extreme Heat

Extreme heat in Arizona impacts the way people live, work, and play. Not all populations, however, experience intense temperatures the same way. Some communities are more at risk than others due to historical underspending in their community, pre-existing health conditions, or socioeconomic factors. Dr. Melissa Guardaro will share community stories of urban heat, climate equity, and potential solutions to reduce heat risk.  

Presenter: Melissa Guardaro, PhD., Assistant Research Professor Arizona State University

Melissa Guardaro, PhD. is Assistant Research Professor in the Julie Ann Wrigley Global Institute of Sustainability at Arizona State University. Her research focuses on climate adaptation, equity, vulnerability, and urban policy to mitigate and adapt to extreme heat and urban heat island effects. She has partnered with many community-based organizations to create neighborhood heat solutions that improve public health. In her work, Dr. Guardaro weaves together storytelling and human experiences with data-driven research so that residents living in urban heat zones are integral to the conversation and solutions.
