The Heard Museum's exhibit, Away From Home; American Indian Boarding School Stories will be on display at Civic Center for the month of November.
The U.S. government operated off-reservation American Indian boarding schools from 1879 to the present. The history and student experiences at federally-run boarding schools are complex and nuanced, varying by individual, time period, tribal affiliation and school. This is a hidden chapter in American history that continues to profoundly impact American Indian communities today. It is our shared history. Janet Cantley, curator, Heard Museum, will provide an overview of the history and Patty Talahongva, curator, Phoenix Indian School (P.I.) Visitor Center and alumnus of P.I. will tell her personal experiences and the importance of preserving these significant landmarks.
